Day 53: Main Temples 84, 85, and 86

——————————————————————————————————Once, when Kukai was climbing to Yashimaji (Temple 84), he saw some pears and asked an old peasant there if he might have one. The peasant replied the pears were not fit for eating even though he knew this to be a lie and that the pears were ripe and ready to be eaten. Kukai thanked the peasant and went on his way. The pears immediately became inedible and hard as stone. No edible pears grew in that orchard thereafter.

Arriving at Temple 84 in the mist.
Hondo – Yashimaji (Temple 84 – “Roof Island Temple”)
Daishido – Yashimaji. I don’t know if I even mentioned it, but the reason I always post photos of the Hondo (“Main Hall”) and the Daishido (“Great Teacher (Kobo Daishi) Hall”) is that they are the two places we are absolutely required to go at each of the temples we visit in order to complete the 88 Temple Pilgrimage.
Yashima Badgers. People who wish to have babies and good luck visit the Yashima Badgers from around Japan.
Yashima Badgers. The badgers also represent monogamy and peaceful families.

Ruriho-no Ike (“Pond of Emerald Ball”/“Pond of Blood”). The pond is sometimes called the “Pond of Blood” because warriors who fought in a battle cleaned their swords in it, turning the water red.
Arriving at Temple 85. Kukai above the city of Takamatsu.
Sanmon – Temple 85
Yakuriji (Temple 85 – “Eight Chestnuts Temple”). One of the wealthiest of the 88 Temples. People pray here for success in business.

Shidoji. We liked Shidoji as there were plants everywhere and you had to follow paths through the vegetation to get from building to building.
