Day 21: Walking Day

Short post today. As long as this beer lasts me. Connor and I decided we were pushing a little too hard to maintain the schedule I had originally put together for the pilgrimage. We’ve had three long days in a row and our feet are killing us, so we’ve spent the last hour and a half dividing the next four days into five days. It took a lot of juggling between distances and what inns were on the route. There are stretches in the pilgrim route where there are no lodging, so you have to decided between a really short day and a really long day. My original plan had a series of long days before any respite and it didn’t appear to be sustainable. My feet feel like concrete and the beer has not yet kicked in. At least we have lodging for the next two nights reserved.

Back down the coast to Cape Ashizuri

We continued our march down to Cape Ashizuri and skirted Kuroshio Town through a large forested recreational area called Tosa Seinan Great Park Ogata Area. We decided we were enjoying the cool wind and stayed in the forest rather than skirting out to the beach.

Coming out of the south side of the Park, we noted numerous high school age students on … ah, screw it. I’m tired. Here’s some pictures from the day. We walked. A lot. “Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt.”

Japanese Owl Moth. A cool moth I almost stepped on. If you look at other pictures with the moth’s wings folded in, it starts to look like an owl staring back at you.
The rice fields being prepared.
Looking out from Shimanto Bridge up Shimanto River toward Shimanto City.
Lunch at Shimanto Fureba (“Shimanto Flavor”)
Back in the mountain valleys between coastal regions
Journey through the Shin-izuta Tunnel (1,610 meters long)
Don’t clean your fish in the public bathroom.
I liked the contrast between the bamboo and the cedars.
Following the Shimonokae River
Back to the coast
Dinner at Minshuku Okinohama

  1. Bill & Connor,
Can’t thank you enough for your journal it truly is a highlight of my day. I have done 356 miles if the 700 mile hike. These last few years a couple issues have keep me from continuing. I think about it all of the time. It gets into your blood. For me it really was life changing. Being able to see photos of places I’ve walked is inspiring.
You are both doing great Cheers, Jacqueline
