Day 34: Temples 46, 47, Bekkaku Temple 9, 48, 49, 50, 51

Yes, we visited 7 temples today. However, for the next 36 hours we are on pilgrimage break. We are in Matsuyama, about to have some chicken before attending the opening weekend of “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” on IMAX (in English with Japanese subtitles). I’ll post pictures from today and tomorrow soon. Signing out!

Ok. Back online. This post is mostly going to be photos as we visited seven temples, arriving at the last one ten minutes before the temple office closed. It took about two and half hours to reach Temple 46 with 47 and Bekkaku Temple 9 “nailed” before lunch. The total distance between temples 46 and 51 is 12 kilometers, so there was never more than 40 minutes between any two of them.

Descending back toward the ocean and Matsuyama in the distance.

On the outskirts of Matsuyama
Hondo of Joruriji (Temple 46 – “Pure Emerald Temple”) It’s a smaller temple, but we liked it as it was like sitting in a garden. Many small pathways between trees and bushes.
Daishido – Jururiji
1,000-year-old Chinese juniper tree. There are three of them on the temple grounds. Joruriji

Monjuin/Tokuseiji (Bekkaku Temple 9 – “The Summit of Virtue Temple”) It was very small. This is the compound.
Emon Saburo treating Kukai rudely when he came asking for offerings. I need to tell you the story of Emon Saburo – the first pilgrim. Monjuin

A rice granary. Still in the outskirts of Matsuyama. Connor and I both commented how if felt a bit like Tokushima with houses surrounded by plots of farmland and small roads running between fields.
Hondo (left) and Daishido (right) – Sairinji (Temple 48 – “West Forest Temple”)
Sanmon – Sairinji is the only temple you step down into from the main gate. It is said that evil pilgrims cannot pass the temple gate, but instead fall into hell. Connor will no longer be accompanying me during the remainder of the trip. (Just kidding, he returned just in time for dinner and movie.)

Cute signs leading us from Temple 49 to Temple 50. Nine minutes to Temple 50 and 12 minutes to Temple 49.

Sanmon – Ishiteji (Temple 51 – “Stone Hand Temple”). I seriously need to tell you the story of Emon Saburo.

Pagoda – Ishiteji
Ishiteji. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to spend a lot of time at Ishiteji. There were so many other things I wanted to get pictures of, but we had just enough time to get to the hotel, bathe, and then head out to the movies like we had planned.

  2. Enjoying your blog and I’m learning! I didn’t know that it was common to eat raw egg for breakfast. I, too, thought Japan would be a very clean country. A question about the food: What are the pink things that I often see in your photos of food?
