Fairy Chimneys – The Kapadokya region sits between three volcanoes which have erupted at various times over millions of years, causing different layers of rock formation which erode at different rates.

Village carved into stone – Zelve Open Air Museum – After several members of a family living within the village were crushed in a collapse, villagers were moved into more modern accommodations nearby and the village became a museum.

Pottery demonstration and pottery sales pitch. I did eventually give in and buy a vase with two cups which are being shipped to my home.
A “castle” – not for royalty, but for defense and as a lookout for any approaching enemies.
People still live in the carved out homes today.

We weren’t allowed to take photos during the ritual, but after the ritual was completed they performed the dance one last time for photos and video.

  1. Wow, those homes carved into stone look too fanciful to even be real. Like they were drawn by Dr. Seuss. The whirling dervishes look badass. Only they could pull of those hats and those skirts. Your hotel room probably used to a be a 3rd century Christian church. The bed currently sits where the altar once stood. Meanwhile, my room at the Holiday Inn in Charlotte, NC overlooks a Dunkin’ Donuts. On a clear day you can see Five Guys.
